So after all the complicated requirements to work in a German school, I had to face the final step. It's what's called a selection interview to see if I am able to do the two-year required apprenticeship. I got there at 7:30 in the morning and started with half an hour to think about a teaching question they gave me. After the half hour of notetaking, they brought me into a room with six people, including the principal, two teachers, one HR guy, and the official guy from the school ministry from North Rhein Westfalia. We talked for about another half an hour or so and they then told me there was another candidate and asked me to come back in an hour and a half or so and then they could tell me for sure.
Also nach alle die komplizierte Notwendigkeiten um in einer deutschen Schule arbeiten zu dürfen, musste ich dann den letzten Schritt ins Gesicht schauen. Es heisst ein Auswahlgespräch um zu sehen ob ich fähig bin die zweijährige Ausbildung zu machen. Ich bin um 7.30 angekommen und hab angefangen, mit eine Aufgabe, die ich eine halbe Stunde hatte um zu überlegen. Nach der halben Stunde, bin ich in einem Raum mit sechs Leute geführt worden, unter anderem der Schulleiter, zwei Lehrer, ein HR Manager, und der offizieler Mann vom Schulministerium NRWs. Wir haben noch eine halbe Stunde geredet und dann ist mir gesagt worden, dass sie noch eine Kandidatin hatten, und haben mich darum gebeten, raus zu gehen und nach anderthalb Stunden zurückzukommen, dann würden die mir bescheid sagen können.
When I came back they said that I had some really good qualities that they liked a lot. They said that I was capable of doing the apprenticeship, but that the other candidate was better and they were offering the position to her. However, they said if I'm interested, they did have a substitute position open because a couple of their teachers were taking several months off, who were having children. The principal then offered me a year contract to cover their positions and gather a little more experience after which I could reapply for the apprenticeship.
Als ich zurückkam, haben die mir gesagt, dass ich manche gute Qualitäten habe, dass ihnen gefallen hatte. Sie haben gesagt, dass ich fähig bin die Ausbildung zu machen, aber dass die andere Kandidatin besser war und dass sie ihr die Stelle geben werden. Aber wenn ich Interesse hätte, hatten die auch eine Stelle als Vertretungslehrer offen, weil ein paar von den Lehrer machen Kinderurlaub. Der Schulleiter hat mir dann vorgeschlagen einen Jahresvertrag um für die Lehrer zu vertreten und ein bisschen Erfahrung zu sammeln, nachdem ich neuversuchen könnte, die Ausbildung zu machen.
I've accepted the offer and will begin at the end of August on the first day of school. Although I'm a little disappointed at not having received the position I wanted, I'm quite happy at the opportunity to improve myself and hope to get a more permanent position in the future. Incidentally, kind of a funny thing that came out of a rule from the school ministry, I'm only allowed to teach something I studied in college. So, although I'm a native English speaker, I'm not allowed to do the apprenticeship as math and English teacher. What I studied was math and German. So, in Germany, I will officially do the apprenticeship (if I get to do the apprenticeship) as a math and German teacher... how ironic is that? I'm sure my students have better German than I do... :)
Ich habe das Angebot akzeptiert und werde Ende August anfangen, am ersten Schultag. Obwohl ich ein bisschen enttäuscht bin, dass ich die Stelle, die ich wollte nicht bekommen habe, bin ich sehr zufrieden mit dieser Möglichkeit mich zu verbessern und hoffe in der Zukunft eine festere Stelle zu bekommen. Übrigens, ein bisschen lustig was von einem Regen von Schulministerium gekommen ist, darf ich nur etwas unterrichten, das ich and der Universität studiert habe. Deswegen, obwohl ich Englischsprachler bin, darf ich die Ausbildung als Mathe und Englischlehrer nicht machen. Was ich studiert habe war Mathe und Deutsch. Daher werde ich in Deutschland die Ausbildung offiziel in Mathe und Deutsch machen (wenn ich die Ausbildung machen darf)... wir ironisch ist das? Ich bin mir sicher, dass meine Schüler besser Deusch als ich haben.... :)
